Spirometry is a screening tool to assess one’s lung capacity. This may be used to diagnose lung conditions such as asthma or COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).
A spirometry test will take approximately 30 minutes with a nurse and involves blowing into a tube 3 times to determine baseline lung function. 3 doses of a bronchodilator medication such as ventolin are administered and then the test is rerun after 10 minutes. This will determine the affect of the medication and whether the patient requires medication therapy. This test is then interpreted by a GP and an asthma management plan may be developed.
If you’re experiencing symptoms of a respiratory condition or have been diagnosed with a lung disorder, spirometry testing may be recommended to help diagnose and manage your condition.
