A nurse’s scope of practice is defined by the Nursing Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA, 2015), as “the full spectrum of roles, functions, responsibilities, activities and decision-making capacity that individuals within that profession are educated, competent and authorised to perform”.
To assist Practice Nurses to achieve this the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) have released the National Practice Standards for Nurses in General Practice. These standards provide a bench mark from which nurses can ensure that they are practicing within their scope of practice. This will ensure best practice and care not only for clients who visit their surgeries, but also to all members of the team in which nurses work. The standards have been used within competencies to inform and to ensure best practice.
